  13. Modern explorer Nicholas Crane travels across eight maps that changed the face of Britain in a series of geographical challenges through some of today's wildest landscapes, telling the story of British mapmaking from the time of Chaucer through to the current generation of cyber-mappers. Here, he travels across William Roy's pioneering military map of 18th-century Scotland, and uses it to lead him through some wild Highland landscapes. Series 1 After the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the British Army decided it desperately needed an accurate map if it was to govern the rebellious Scottish Highlands. They gave a young military engineer, William Roy, the job. With the help of army volunteers, Nick Crane tests out the accuracy of Roy's methods -using 18th-century chain traversing - and then follows one of Roy's mapped roads across some of the most dangerous and exposed terrain in Scotland. He ends up at Rannoch Moor, where Roy's road appears to run out, or does it? William Roy's Military Survey of Scotland By mountain bike, in mid-winter, Nicholas tries to follow Ogilby's strip map route from York to Lancaster. He tries his hand at 17th century dimensuration - road surveying- and discovers along the way that old roads may fade away but, if you know what you're looking for, they never disappear. John Ogilby's Britannia It is an icon of London, a design classic printed on everything from t-shirts to baseball caps, but the Underground Map started with one man working in his bedroom. Harry Beck was an electrical engineer. In 1931 he realised that his circuit diagrams were a perfect model for a new map of the underground network. Nicholas Crane travels the tube to discover how he did it. Why did he exclude everything at street level and what dictated his choice of colour for each line? Beck Created in the time of Geoffrey Chaucer, the Gough Map is both a real mystery and a landmark in map-making. It was still in use two hundred years after it was drawn. Who was the map-maker and why was it made? Nick explores the mysterious red lines along the coast? Why is there a massive green wilderness dominating the centre of the country? Can Nick use this ancient map to find his way on foot from Snowdon to St David's? The Gough Map Before the late 1700s no sailor could fix his exact position on open sea, so ships sailed close to land, which gave them landmarks to recognise, but also increased their risk of shipwreck. Greenville Collins's charts of the British coastline, published in 1693, saved hundreds of ships and lives. Greenville Collins Modern explorer Nicholas Crane deciphers William Smith's extraordinary underground map of 1815, on an arduous geological journey that explores why it's much more than simply a cartographic masterpiece. William Smith's Geological Map of England and Wales Can modern explorer Nicholas Crane use Christopher Saxton's exquisite map of Norfolk to lead him safely through some of the wildest waterland landscapes of today? Christopher Saxton's Atlas of England and Wales He uses a modern OS map to lead him safely through some of the wildest Highland landscapes, exploing the methods of the original surveyors back in the 1930s. He discovers how hard they worked, struggling up mountains with heavy surveying equipment, and attempts his own triangulation survey at night. Martin Hotine's Ordnance Survey (1935-1950) Series 2 When cycling took off in Britain in a big way in the 1880s, everybody wanted to get on a bicycle and head for the country. And for all these keen bicyclers, Bartholomew made the very first cycling maps. With the best cycling routes and information for the Victorian cyclist, these maps were highly popular and distinctive. It was a whole new way of looking at the country - for leisure and healthy pursuits, freedom, and exploration. Bartholomew's Cycling Map of England and Wales Can Nick find a missing mountain pass where the last wolves in Scotland roamed? Timothy Pont graduated from St Andrew's in 1583 and set off to survey Scotland. It was a major undertaking at a time when wolves still roamed the Highlands and it was difficult and dangerous to travel in rival clan territory. Over 18 years he made 77 maps - the first survey of Scotland - with exceptional detail and unsurpassed information. His maps include 350 mountains - some of which still remain to be identified - can Nick track any of them down? Timothy Pont's Map of Scotland In the 1740s, at the time of the Jacobite rising, young Orkney schoolmaster Murdoch Mackenzie decided that the treacherous waters around Orkney should be properly mapped. Hundreds of ships had been lost in the Northern Passage, the stretch of water between the north coast of mainland Scotland and Orkney, and it was no longer good enough to have sketchy, inaccurate charts. Mackenzie's Chart of the Orkneys (1748) John Speed was the son of a Cheshire tailor, and he produced some of the most beautiful and famous maps in the world - but he didn't include roads. John Speed's Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine John Cary was commissioned to survey and map the hottest new investment of the industrial age, the canals. His maps show the routes of all of Britain's canals and are a document of a lost world, and when Nick goes looking for the Cary canal routes through the Black Country, he has a lot of detective work to do as many have been filled in or converted into railway lines. John Cary's Inland Navigation The first edition of the Ordnance Survey was the product of the most complete mapping study of Britain since the Tudors. For the first time, there were maps linking county to county, based on a scale of one inch to the mile. The end of the 18th century was a bad time for Britain. The American colonies had just been lost. Napoleon's forces were sweeping across Europe and the French fleet was on standby to attack Britain. Under threat of invasion, the army said the country had to be mapped to see where the French were likely to invade. William Mudge's Ordnance Survey After getting lost in London using a map that hadn't been updated since 1918, Phyllis Pearsall decided to map the whole of London herself. She claimed to have set out at 5.00am each day and worked 18 hours a day, walking all 23,000 of London's streets. Her map, the London A-Z, was completed in 1936 and has been one of the most successful maps of all time. Mrs P's A-Z Back in the 1600s, the north of Ireland attracted Protestant colonists who came from Scotland and England to acquire land and enjoy a more prosperous life. Two of these colonists were James Hamilton, 1st Viscount Clandeboye, and Sir Hugh Montgomery. Their lands adjoined each other and for thirty years, they wrangled over the border dividing their territories. Thomas Raven was commissioned by Hamilton to map his estates and, despite the dangers to all mapmakers in Ireland, Raven took it on. Thomas Raven's Clandeboye Estate Maps
  14. More than 150 of Britain’s railway stations are request stops. You have to put out your arm to get the train to stop at the platform. 21. Why would you spend £2,000 on a train journey that takes 36 hours and boasts neither wi-fi nor showers, when a £30 Easyjet flight could get you there in less than two hours? This jaunty documentary climbs aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to try to fathom its perennial allure. As in Agatha Christie’s time, there are plenty of characters to liven up the journey: a fastidious new manager, American passengers who look like they’ve stepped out of Downton Abbey, and a head chef who reveals he’s only deigned to do chips once – for John Travolta’s son. During its nine-month-long season, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express makes over 60 journeys, covering 150,000 kilometres, with the majority of trips between London and Venice. The train is comprised of 17 unique 1920s carriages that have transported a host of elite individuals across Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey for more than a century. This documentary follows the stories of the staff and passengers as the train makes its way across Europe, with some customers having paid more than £2,000 for the privilege. 23. Alexander Armstrong embarks on an epic 8000‐mile journey halfway around the Arctic Circle in this new three‐part documentary series for ITV. His journey takes place deep in mid‐winter, the most spectacular but potentially deadly time to see this incredible region. We think of the Arctic as an unforgiving, ice‐bound wasteland, but his journey is full of surprises. Alexander’s voyage begins in Scandinavia, before he heads westwards into Iceland and Greenland, through Canada and Alaska and finishing on the international dateline that divides the continents of North America and Alaska. He witnesses the world’s most stunning natural wonders and finds out why the far north has such a magnetic lure for its extraordinary inhabitants, in a challenging adventure in which he needs to survive wildly unpredictable weather and temperatures as low as ‐40 degrees Celsius. In episode one, Alexander’s odyssey begins in Scandinavia, as he flies into Northern Norway on a light aircraft towards Bodo, ten miles north of the Arctic Circle. His pilot John decides to let him lose on the controls for his first ever flying lesson, before they land at Bodo to catch the day’s only ferry to the Lofoten Islands. 24. In 1928, Lady Heath became the first person to fly solo from Cape Town to London. Eighty-five years later, Tracey Curtis-Taylor sets out in a vintage biplane to retrace her flight. Her extraordinary eight-and-a-half-week journey from Cape Town to Goodwood is nearly 10,000 miles long and takes her through 15 African countries. From the beauty of the wilderness to the challenge of flying through war-torn nations, Tracey faces many of the same challenges as her aviatrix predecessor. With aviation fuel scarce and with a top speed of only 95 miles per hour, her progress is slow and at times frightening. Tracey will need the same courage and single-minded determination of Lady Heath if she is to make her lifelong dream come true.
